How to Dehumidify your Garage
I’ve lived in our house for 22 years and our garage has always had a problem with rusty tools and even our Toyota 4Runner’s frame rusted out. I’ve finally had enough and started looking for a dehumidifier for our garage. Having a dehumidifier in the garage will help with moisture problems in the hot summers AND help remove the humidity in the winter from the snow melting off of the cars. Yes, this has helped our garage stay dry and helps with stopping rust on tools and our car’s exposed frame.
I wanted to ensure that the garage dehumidifier was good enough to run year round and had a drain hose that I could hook up to our plumbing so I didn’t have to empty buckets on a daily basis. I purchased the VEVOR 125 Pints Commercial Dehumidifier from Amazon and it came with some unexpected features that I was totally unaware of. First, it came with mounts so I can mount it in the air above our garage door AND the control panel is detachable so I could attach it to the wall near the garage door opener. WOW! this is cool.
Once it arrived, I was surprised how heavy it was. So be aware that this thing weighs around 40 lbs. But it’s not large at all. Very well built and was easy to setup.
I started by unboxing it and running it on my workbench for a few days. I put a bucket under it and waited. The dehumidifier removed about a gallon a day and it got the humidity down to around 35%. To keep rust from forming, the humidity should be between 30 and 40%.
This garage dehumidifier has a range for when it turns on and shuts off. For example, if I set it at 40%, the dehumidifer will dehumidify down 3 degrees below what it’s set to and then shut off. It will turn back on when it goes above the set percent.
I 100% recommend this dehumidifier if you’re planning on adding one to your garage. I’ll update this post with photos and more pros and cons after it’s been running for a while.
